New Road Primary School is Peterborough Extra’s adopted school. It is also one of the ten Greggs Breakfast Club schools that MITC supports annually. The school recently received its first Ofsted Good rating, after decades of requiring improvement. Peterborough SOM Charles Johnson-Laird and Eleanor Evans from MITC were able to visit the school to see first-hand the difference MITC is making.
New Road hosts Breakfast Club every morning for around 40 children (of the ~170 on role). They can choose from toast, cereals and fruit to start their day with a full stomach. The school also finds that Breakfast Club helps to understand if any children are having a tough time or need help to ‘re-set’ at the beginning of the day. This hopefully means that the day going forward is a more productive one.
The school also benefits from MITC’s annual Books to Schools programme, which is currently helping to boost their library stock, as the school aims to increase its intake to 450+ in the next few years. This year MITC was also able to work with Greggs to provide a Christmas gift – New Road used theirs to send every child home with their own brand-new book.
“We are all incredibly grateful for the support we receive from MITC. The support for our breakfast club and our school library is second to none and makes a huge difference to all of our children, especially those living in very low-income homes. This year’s Christmas gift, a book for every child, was the cherry on the cake!!! Thank you from everyone in our school community.”
Executive Head, Rob Litten
The visit also helped Charles to see first-hand the difference MITC can make locally.
“It was humbling to visit New Road. A lot of the children benefiting from MITC’s help don’t come to school with a full stomach – something a lot of us take for granted. It’s great to see how we’ve been able to make a small difference to them.”
